Set up a custom domain
RecodeQR lets you use your own domain for your QR codes. This is a great way to keep your branding consistent and make your codes look more professional.
Why use a custom domain for QR codes?
Using a custom domain for your QR codes has several benefits:
- Branding: A custom domain helps reinforce your brand identity and makes your QR codes look more professional.
- Trust: Users are more likely to scan a QR code that uses a familiar domain.
- SEO: Using a custom domain can improve your search engine rankings and drive more traffic to your website.
- Flexibility: You can migrate your QR codes to another service without breaking the links.
Set up a custom domain
Custom domains let you brand your dynamic QR code links (e.g. qr.yourcompany.com/my-link).
- Go to your Dashboard > Custom Domains.
- Click Add custom domain.
- Enter your domain or subdomain (like
qr.yourdomain.com). - Follow the instructions to create a CNAME record at your DNS provider.
- Once DNS propagates (can take up to 24 hours), your domain will go live.
You can now choose it when creating new dynamic QR codes to use the new domain.
Use a custom slug
Once a custom domain is attached to a QR code, you can set a custom slug to get a memorable link like qr.yourdomain.com/review or qr.yourdomain.com/menu instead of the default generated link like qr.yourdomain.com/c/abc123.
- When creating a new dynamic QR code, open the Naming & link section and pick a custom domain.
- The Custom slug field will appear. Enter a short, memorable slug (2–48 characters, lowercase letters, digits, and hyphens).
- Leave the field blank to use the default auto-generated link.
A few things to know:
- Slugs are locked once the QR code is created. Just like the custom domain, it cannot be changed after the QR code has been created.
- Each slug must be unique on a given domain, but different domains can reuse the same slug.
What happens when you delete
Deleting a QR code, custom domain, workspace, or your account will deactivate any printed codes pointing at it — they'll show a "QR code deactivated" or "QR code not found" notice when scanned.
Slug links can be rewired. As long as you keep DNS control of the domain, you can re-add it and create a new QR with the same slug — printed codes will resolve to the new destination.
Auto-generated /c/<id> links cannot be rewired. The ID stays claimed forever to prevent accidental takeover by a different QR code.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your custom domain:
- DNS not propagating: Check your DNS settings and ensure the CNAME record is correct.
- Domain not showing up: Wait for DNS changes to propagate. This can take up to 24 hours.
- Cloudflare users: If using Cloudflare, ensure the CNAME record is set to DNS only (grey cloud) to avoid conflicts. We handle SSL for you.
